A Northern Soul

A Northern Soul

In 2017, Hull was named the UK’s City of Culture and filmmaker Sean McAllister returned in order to direct the opening ceremony and in the process find out if could have any impact on a working class city that has suffered blow after economic blow in the past few decades.

Upon meeting local warehouse worker Steve Arnott, he sets about documenting his herculean efforts to start the « Beats Bus », a mobile music and dance workshop for young, underprivileged children in the area.
Steve is a struggling father who despite his best efforts is slowly sliding deeper into debt.

The film lifts the lid on a lost generation of workers, giving more and more to their employers and getting less and less back, and while Steve seems to be struck down at every turn, his hope and desire to have a positive impact on society shines through.
