Top 5 Short Documentaries at Paris Surf And Skateboard Film Festival

Documentary Weekly is proud to be an official media partner of the Paris Surf & Skateboard Film Festival (PSSFF), taking place 24th to 27th September.

18 competing international independent films including 12 national premieres, 4 photography exhibitions, a gig and a DJ set are taking place under the trendy glass roof of L’Entrepôt in the 14th arrondissement.

In attendance at the festival we’ll be soaking up the atmosphere, meeting directors, catching audience reactions and even orchestrating some kickflip challenges - all streamed to you via our Facebook and Instagram stories.

A highlight of this year’s edition is the wide variety of short films - here are five of the best. They’ll be screened across three different instalments on Saturday 26th September and Sunday 27th September.

To attend, you can buy your tickets here.

Just Go Fucking Surfing by Juul Hesselberth

Although more women are surfing, their stories still remain rarely told. What does the marketed ‘sexy surfer girl’ image do with women who never felt like they suited this image? How has this influenced their career and self-esteem?

For her ethnographic documentary Juul Hesselberth spent three months in Australia, where she followed four female pro surfers disillusioned by their industry. This film moves through the online representations to the lived reality of female athletes.

‘Just Go Fucking Surfing’ will be showing as part of “Compétition Courts 1” at 15:15 on Saturday 26 September.

Uncomfortably Comfortable by Myriah Marquez

This is nothing less than one of our favourite shorts of the year, recently featured in our Free of the Week series…

Myriah’s childhood was spent in and out of hospital dealing with a debilitating bowel condition and upon turning 18, she hit the road in search of life experiences. Eight years later, she found herself fleeing a life in Seattle with nothing but her four wheels, landing in Venice California. Now, thanks to international viral sensation GRLSWIRL, an empowering community of girl skateboarders, she lives out of her self-made all mod-cons van, having recently returned from her first trip abroad.

This is a raw glimpse into her life, a video diary that escapes the norms of film and documentary.

‘Uncomfortably Comfortable’ will be showing as part of “Compétition Courts 2” at 14:45 on Sunday 27 September.

Pain (Full) by Jose Ortega, Aljaz Babnik

Pain(FULL) is a surreal audiovisual project that delves into the concept of the need for pain and suffering in order to appreciate and achieve happiness. It uses skateboarding as a metaphor, illustrated by the director-duo’s silky skills as they glide through hotel surrounded by desert, and explains a journey of liberation and acceptance of suffering

‘Pain (Full)’ will be showing as part of “Compétition Courts 2” at 14:45 on Sunday 27 September.

Double Sexy by Ben Mullinkosson

Ben Mullinkosson is one of the most exciting documentary filmmakers around. His films stretch the boundaries of fact and fiction to show beauty in the everyday.

Now currently working on a hybrid film set in Chengdu, China, about “getting fucked up, falling in love, throwing up and learning the meaning of life” starring the friends he’s made while partying and skateboarding in the city.

“Double Sexy” is the slick, freewheeling, booze-addled and thoroughly enjoyable precursor to that project.

We interviewed Ben for our What Are You Watching? series - you can watch it here.

‘Double Sexy’ will be showing as part of “Compétition Courts "3” at 18:30 on Sunday 27 September.

The Armstrongs by Arthur Neumeier

This short film follows The Armstrong family and their unconventional lifestyle. A large family, they share strong bonds with each other and the ocean; making a point of placing well being, unity, love and a genuine connection with nature above financial gain and status.

‘The Armstrongs’ will be showing as part of “Compétition Courts "3” at 18:30 on Sunday 27 September.
