The Creativity of Becoming a Mother in Lockdown
In June we shared details of paus’s lockdown competition, an initiative to unlock filmmakers’ ingenuity by asking them to produce a short film while respecting the safety measures put in place.
Three films were selected by a panel of expert judges for a final live-screening event, giving the audience a chance to tip the filmmaker of their choice and determine the competition winner. The winning film was I Just Wanted To Say by Ollie McCoy, an emotional tribute to the essential workers risking their lives on the Coronavirus frontline.
Among the finalists was today’s Free of the Week, Gloria Kurnik’s Mothers, a delightful film that immediately captured our imagination with the simplicity of its approach and its raw beauty.
Gloria’s daughter was born in the midst of lockdown, with the two in complete isolation for the first few weeks of their relationship. In discovering the range of new skills she had to master, Gloria dedicated her film to mothers: “one of lockdown’s most versatile creators”.
