MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A.

MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A.

The long-anticipated portrait of popstar M.I.A. is currently out in cinemas and it is 100% worth the outing !

Matangi was born in Sri Lanka and grew up in South London. She settled there as a refugee fleeing civil war in her native country while her father remained to lead terrorist group the Tamil Tigers.

The beauty of this film is that it successfully weaves together so many different narratives in Maya’s story as an individual. There’s her struggle as an immigrant teenager being treated differently because of the colour of her skin, her desire to find solace in returning to her long lost homeland, her phenomenally rapid rise as an artist and her difficulties as an activist, all held together by a lifelong search for identity.

Archive footage is beautifully mixed with up to date interviews and music videos, culminating with a thrilling yet thought-provoking discovery of the girl, woman and mother behind M.I.A.
