Cinéma du Réel is Cancelled, But Not Its Free Online Competition!
As we write to you from the French countryside in full grip of the Coronavirus lockdown, it’s hard to believe that just a few days ago we attended Cinéma du Réel’s brilliant opening screening of Babette Mangolte’s “Calamity Jane & Delphine Seyrig, A Story” at the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
But fear not! The organisers have got you covered with plenty of fantastic docs available to watch online.
In partnership with Mediapart, you can now discover Cinéma du Réel’s thirteen “Premières Fenêtres” selections for free. These are first-time pieces from young, talented new directors, ranging from the experimental to the observational, from five minutes to an hour and from Cuba’s harvest to the Greek islands. Perfect to fill the upcoming weeks of confinement!
Once you’ve had a chance to see the films for yourself, vote for your favourite and determine this year’s winner of the selection. Most of the films are french language only, but some can be enjoyed with English subtitles if required.
“La Vie Sensible” by Timothée Maubray, the sensitive portrait of a green-thumbed teenager struggling to fit the mould, is one of our favourites. Another beautiful film among the selections is “Linda, Un Printemps” by Charles Moreau Boiteau, the diary of a hardened 8 year-old girl manning her mother’s fairground stand.
