What Happens When You Give an iPhone to a Homeless Person
To create her latest documentary film, Giulia Gandini gave an iPhone to Lily for three days. At the time, Lily had been sleeping rough for a year and a half and was gifted the phone along with additional support.
The result is Home Stream, an unassuming yet beautiful short documentary supported by both the British Film Institute and the United Nations that has over 6 million views on Facebook. The film also headlined at the brilliant We The People Festival in London, which our contributor Gabriella Volak was lucky enough to attend back in 2019 and it is now an honour to feature it as our latest Free of the Week.
Far from the usual sensationalism or voyeurism of previous films on the topic of homelessness, Home Stream is able to give a true perspective on life on the streets by welcoming Lily herself into the creation process. Given this rare opportunity to tell her own story, Lily shows us her day-to-day as well as the things that mean most to her in life in a truly touching fashion.
