Helvetica

It’s likely you couldn’t point out the Helveltica typeface if you were asked to, but walk down any given city street today with someone who can, and you’ll realise just how unbelievably influential it is.

Gary Hustwit’s film (a director we’re particularly fond of at Documentary Weekly) succeeds in conveying just how important this relatively new font has become in our society. Join him in meeting the people who’s life’s work has revolved around Helvetica.

Speaking to the Guardian at the time of the film’s release, Hustwit commented: "I couldn't believe that a film like this didn't exist already, because these people are gods and goddesses. What they do is more than just logos and corporate branding - they design the type that we read every day in newspapers and magazines, onscreen and on television.”

To us mere mortals, this is a welcome insight into the hidden world of typefaces. And though that might not sound particularly enticing, this is one of those rare films that will genuinely transform your perspective of every day life.

As Hustwit says “Fonts don't just appear out of Microsoft Word: there are human beings and huge stories behind them."
